Lately, I’ve been working with marine debris that was collected along the Oregon Coast and in Puget Sound this summer. Here are some new pieces!

Ropey Sea
All items collected during a one-day cleanup on Vashon Island! I made this tumultuous sea/sky piece out of fishing debris including net, fiber, rope, and more.

Buoy Wind Spinners
Made from used buoys collected from Puget Sound by volunteer “Soundkeepers.” These are hanging outside my house to give me more room in the studio. You might see them in the neighborhood!

Slow Feeders for Marble and Mercury
Custom made ceramic food bowls for two beloved cats. I didn’t have to think twice about what to make for my cousin as a wedding gift. She and her partner adore their two cats Marble and Mercury! I designed these pieces with their new family and home in mind: pink and green underglaze to match the decor, hand-carved lettering to highlight the cats’ bold personalities, and a maze-like “slow feeder” interior to engage their problem-solving skills. Can’t wait to surprise the four of them!

Jerram tries to work with the same enthusiasm as a kindergartener with a crayon. Inspired by surrealism, he aims to tap into his subconscious by abandoning all logic and reason. What comes out is usually as strange as it is friendly.

Block Printed T-Shirt
I carved a rubber block so I could print with it many times and paint around it. It’s always a challenge—knowing how long to iron the shirt so the ink is set in but not burned.

Cartoon Rat Hanging Out by a Lake
This was made in advance for an October prompt list called Rattober.

I have discovered a new-to-me surface to work on: Yupo! What is it? Yupo is a waterproof synthetic paper that is ultra-smooth and somewhat slippery. Thinned oil paint sits on top of the surface until enough tooth is built up in layers. Unexpected drips happen and are wanted. The smooth surface allows me to model my equine form by adding and removing paint with various tools—an exciting dance until the figure is formed. It accepts other media well such as graphite, STABILO film pencils, oil bar, and cold wax medium (once it is adhered to a solid substrate). These latest paintings are inspired by my most recent trip to the Kiger Mustang area in Eastern Oregon.
As an artist, I have dedicated myself to the subject that inspires me most, the equine form. I am drawn to the lines in a horse’s conformation, fluid, angular, curvaceous and graceful. My process always begins out in the field. In a paddock or the wild, usually one or two horses captivate my interest, evoking the desire to create. This happens through witnessing their character, movement, and reflections of light on their coat; sometimes I am also inspired by the story of what the animal has to share.
